Convenient & Easy to Use

Special Instructions

  1. Sizing Thank you for buying HipGuard™. Make sure you have the correct size. HipGuard™ is available in small (31-36"), medium (35-42") and large (41-50"+). If you are unsure of your size, use a tape measure on the widest part of your hips.

  2. Identifying the trochanter The area of the hip needing protection is the trochanter. In order to reduce hip fractures, correct placement of the HipGuard™ impact shields over this area of the hip is important. The trochanter is the uppermost area at the top and outside of your leg where the thigh ends. Do not confuse the trochanter with another part of the hip called the ilium, which is the bone you feel just below your waist and at the front of your stomach. To find your trochanter, lower your arms so that the palms of your hands are resting against the outside of your thighs. Move your hands up and down until you feel a bony are at the top of your leg. The hard surface of the trochanter should be felt under the palms or fingers of your hands. If not, try lifting one leg a few inches off the ground and turning your foot in and out (i.e., towards your other leg and away fm you.) This action will reveal the indented area of flesh covering the top of the trochanter. Another method of locating your trochanter is to try lifting your leg up and down sideways to locate the indentation of flesh.

  3. Placement of shields The top of the HipGuard™ shields should be placed slightly above the trochanter with the hard plastic facing out and the soft foam touching the body. The shield is designed so that the trochanter will fit into the rectangle molded into the soft foam.

  4. Tightening HipGuard™ works best and stays put when firmly tightened. How tight? About the same tightness you would use when lacing your shoe. You should be able to slide only one finger between your hip and the impact shield.

  5. Rising above the hips When seated or toileting, HipGuard™ may rise above the hips. This is a normal function. You may, in fact, choose to lift the belt slightly above the hips to increase seated comfort. Always make sure the HipGuard™ is pushed back down over the hips before standing.

  6. Washing Remove the shields and fasten velcro closings. See the label on the HipGuard™ for the washing instructions for the belt.

  7. Inspection After a fall examine your HipGuard™ and replace shield if cracks appear.

No warranty is made, either expressed or implied, that injury will be reduced with the use of HipGuard™. Clinical studies show that wearing hip protection can reduce but not eliminate the risk of hip fractures from accidental falls. Not all hip fractures are fall-related and, therefore, cannot be prevented by hip protection. HipGuard™ is designed to be worn during normal daily routine and is not to be used to undertake unusual or unsafe activities. This constitutes the sole warranty between the parties and except as expressly stated, contains all the representations and warranties of HipGuard™.
